Maui, Hawaii – Day Seven

Today we headed to Lahaina for a hula show. Sidda just loves the hula shows, the only hula song I remember is the Hukilau! Grandma wants to make sure every kid is happy, so a hula show was required for Sidda this trip. Meanwhile, Micah isn’t feeling so hot (who gets a cough in MAUI?!) so Papa (also not feeling so good, after cracking his ribs! Stop being so tough dad, take it easy!) so those two are going to hang out at home for the day. Micah adores his papa so this is the perfect arrangement to keep the seven day grumps at bay.

Oh we’re going to a hukilau
A huki huki huki huki hukilau
Everybody loves the hukilau
Where the laulau is the kaukau at the luau

We throw our nets out into the sea
And all the amaama come a swimming to me
Oh, we’re going to a hukilau
A huki huki huki hukilau

What a beautiful day for fishing
That old Hawaiian way
Where the hukilau nets are swishing
Down in old Laie bay

A huki huki huki huki hukilau
Everybody loves the hukilau
Where the laulau is the kaukau at the luau
We throw our nets out into the sea
And all the amaama come a swimming to me
Oh, we’re going to a hukilau
A huki huki huki hukilau

We headed to Lahaina and had a yummy lunch at Bubba Gumps, Forrest Gump is my favorite movie ever so it was special for me to see some of the movie props and of course we aced the trivia! (I mean, who DOESNT know he drank Dr. Pepper, and 15- by the way). “But since, number one, I wasn’t hungry but thirsty, and number two, they was free, I must have drank me about 15 Dr. Peppers.”

After lunch we wandered Lahaina a bit, and then headed up to the cannery mall for the show. It was a Keiki show (kids) so all the performers were under 18, and such promising talent! They are all so happy to be up there carrying on traditions and stories told for generations, and so beautiful. They invited people up to dance the Hukilau with them, so Sidda jumped up and did her best!

While we did that, Brian hiked the old Kings Highway, took a side trail to the beach, and then looped back around. Greeted by wild goats and some rock art, he had a good time- and I didnt have to hike in the sun! Win! We had planned to head out to the Dragons Teeth and Labyrinth but Sidda was sleepy and tired, so we decided to save it for another day.

Here are some of Brians pics from his cell phone, still, pretty good from a cell!

The day ended with some Wii fun, a little swimming, and some grilled steak. Yum! Brian goes home tomorrow evening so I’m leaving tomorrow up to him, we’ll see what adventures we come up with! Aloha!
